is it possible to edit web.xml and sun-web.xml on run-time to configure security roles?

if its possible, what are the steps to do it?

does it require the whole web application to be re-deployed?

AFAIK, this is not supported. You can confirm by asking on the
glassfish users forum and follow up by filing an RFE.

could you link me to the glassfish users forum?
I couldn't find any glassfish subforum on this forums.netbeans.org

also, what is RFE? and where should I submit it to?
