This may seem a stupid question, but how do I change between the insert (INS) and overwrite(OVR) modes in the editor?

I've tried the obvious - toggling the INSERT key, with various combinations of SHIFT, CTRL, ALT - but to no avail.

There is no topic in the Help for this question.

Is there some totally improbable key combination I have to use?

I think I've figured out where the problem (if there is one) lies.

Its in the following inconsistency:-

If Netbeans starts up with a project open but no document in the editor, the INS/OVR status is displayed, but is disabled.
When a document is subsequently opened, the INS/OVR modes are active. However, when you close the last document in the editor, the INS/OVR status disappears.
Why then is the INS/OVR status displayed on start up with no document open?

That's where my confusion was.
