Does anyone have any idea why netbeans 6.5 RC2 is running slow in Ubuntu 8.04 (code completion loading)? It isn't extremely slow but just seems sluggish. I have been using netbeans 6.5 RC2 in windows xp and it runs normally so it is somewhat of a pain to see it so slow when working on ubuntu.

Thanks,

Yes, this is good question. It can be influence by the java version.
Ubuntu by default doesn't use the Sun java VM. In terminal write java
--version and you will see, which version you use.

Petr

I see, thanks! I think was using the default Ubuntu java vm.

I installed the apt package sun-java6-bin - and when I do java -version

Code:
java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode, sharing)

Is this what I should see?

Thanks,

I am still finding it fairly slow. It is even slower when a project is under version control...

Is there anything else I can do to improve the performance. I really would like to use Ubuntu but when I see how fast it is in windows...

Thanks,

The really bad news for you that the Ubuntu is one of the slowest
distribution. That opinion is coming from my experience. So this is
not the official version Smile
You know, I use gentoo and this is a little bit different than Ubuntu.
At my job I am working on Windows XP and home I am working on
Gentoo-Linux. Sometimes I wonder how fast the windows and how many
times comfortable than Linux. But sometimes I am really hate XP.

I suggest to you check the video card driver. If you use nvidia you
can use 2 driver. The closed source is the good choice. I have never
used Ati.
Other hand, you should check that your system is use DMA or not.

Sorry my english.

András

Could you provide more information about your machine? Memory, processor
etc. Do you have Compiz turn on?

Thanks,
Petr

My PC is an HP Pavilion a1730n [AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 4600+, 2 gig ram] - My video card is an ATI x1950 (I put that in).

I now have Compiz turned off because it made it even slower and gave some problems with Netbeans (dialogs being distorted).

Thanks for your help,

Hmm, your machine is fast. I have slower machine. Only one difference is
that I don't have 64 bits machine. Do you have also 64 bits Ubuntu and Java?

One more question is, how many files do you have in your project?

Regards,
Petr

I suggest to you start the NetBeans and start using it. while you work
open 2 console. One of them running htop, in the another running
iotop. you can see what the cause your machine is get slow.
hint to htop: press SHIFT+p to order the threads what is eat your
processor. To order iotop see manual.
you can use dstat to monitor your machine but this is a little bit difficult.
I have a project with Zend Framework (more than 1300 files) and my
files (more than 300 files) with subversion and the NetBeans is almost
faster than eclipse-3.3.
