Hi RoR community,

I'm installed this evening netbeans 6.5 "just released" and tried to update the existent RoR projects but, nothing works.

Only the message "Rails requires RubyGems >= 1.3.1 (you have 1.2.0). Please 'gem update --system' and try again" works fine:-(

(FYI I read the forum post "Getting Netbeans to recognize Rubygems update")

In the past, it was easy to update RoR Aplications after installing a new netbeans version, like from 6.1 to 6.5RC2

In my opinion it was unacceptable to release netbeans 6.5 for RoR users, it's only a disappointing step back.

Sorry, but in this way, netbeans can not be recommended for developing RoR-enterprise-solutions.

Regs,

Gotzbold

Gotzbold,it is not a NetBeans issue.
Rails 2.2.2 requires at least RubyGems 1.3

Open your terminal and type

sudo gem update --system

This should update your RubyGems to the latest version.

That the danger of living in Ruby, highly dynamic and rapidly
forward-moving, world ;)

We are trying to catch as much as we can, but since a lot of application
we are depending on, are changing rapidly, sometime changing behavior
and/or APIs, we cannot always ensure forward compatibility with not-yet
released gems, application, libraries we are utilizing (like RSpec,
Rake, RubyGems, Rails, ...). Even new release of Ruby might cause
incompatibilities. I believe that this is kind of evolution which will
settle down in time, not by stopping moving forward quickly, but by
stabilizing APIs and behavior compatibility. Also the world of IDE is
kind of new (comparing to others languages).

For now we might at least document cases like your one in our Ruby FAQ:

http://wiki.netbeans.org/RubyFAQ

I or Erno will do it for this one, if nobody else. Yup, we are
appreciating any help wrt. to the help with wiki, with hunting down
cases like this and their culprits, or with code itself.

Thanks. Great to have such wiki-contributor, who did major part of it ;)
