Hi,
Is there any way I can stop the scanning projects. It's happening eternally and is not stopping. I am using 6.5 dev build. (I guess this should not be an issue since I m observing this all along)
Thanks,
Narayanaa

HI,
there is no way to turn it off, since it is a necessary step for analyze your source code for CC and all Java support.
But I can see your memory usage is really high, and the Tasks window is open, maybe if you turn off Task window, just marking to analyze just the current file (if it is not already as it) could help.
Another important thing is, if it never stops, file a issue about it... and try it on RC2, some issue about it was solved a couple of weeks ago.
Regards

I have used NB quite a bit, but when I started it up today it started into the scanning projects mode for a long time. I left it, went shopping, went to the gym, came back and found it was still spinning along. Now for over two hours.
Pretty sure there's something not quite right with that.

I don't know of any way to stop project scanning, but I can tell you
that four hours is *way* beyond typical. In my experience, it tends
to last about 30 seconds at most.
You might look at the log file (var/log/messages under your userdir)
to see if indicates what the problem might be.

| Are Your sources to be reached by a network? Then the network will be
the bottleneck ... Using only one sourcepath over the network results
already in more than half an hour of scanning with my project (currently
no chance to store it locally ). Navigator functionality is also bad,
it seems not to use local cache.
Kind regards
Peter

Here's how I experienced it today. Feel free to draw your own conclusions.
I was trying to deploy a J2EE project when Netbeans forgot that Tomcat was already running and tried to spawn a new Tomcat process. It failed, of course, because port 8080 was already in use. But that's a separate issue.
When the J2EE project deploy failed, I started to see "Scanning Projects" over and over in Netbeans. It'd only be there for a second or so and then go away, but it'd keep happening over and over again.
Once I got Netbeans back in sync with whether Tomcat was running or not, I was able to successfully deploy the J2EE project.
After the successful deploy, "Scanning Projects" went away.

Just want to Bump this thread. I'm seeing the exact same issue in the PHP version of NetBeans 6.7 RC3. It's stalled on 825 of 6000 files and is using up one whole core on my box. The only way I have to fix it is kill the process and restart NetBeans. There needs to be a way to stop/disable this.
System:
Core 2 Duo
Ubuntu 9.07
All source files are stored locally and NEtBeans is an out-of-the-box install... no modifications.
NetBeans is pretty sweet otherwise.

Indeed. It is an issue. I think they'll be working on it in the next release. I doubt it possible in this one. I have heard from a couple folks they know it is an issue, and will be looking at it, but when is a matter of resources etc. I believe it will get fixed though. I know it is a bear to deal with especially on large projects When you run into the problem it makes the IDE pretty unusable...not to mention...if it is eating up the CPU and disk it bogs the entire system down.

There's a wiki which documents the prospects for fixing the Scanning issue;

I'll echo this problem.
NB seems to randomly decide that it needs to rescan. That's understandable, I suppose, given the various dependencies.
But, scanning takes a *long* time, and there's no indication of how long it's going to take. If NB at least popped up a window that said something like, "Rescanning projects; this will take 1 hour", I could work around it.
As it is, the only prudent path is to bypass any dependency on NB, since I have no way of knowing when it will be available to use again.
