Hello,

What's the future like for NetBeans? Is this the end of it?

I've been looking at the OpenWorld lineup and I've noticed that nothing was said about NetBeans. Oracle seems to be pushing JDeveloper. Maybe I'm missing something?

Should we start looking for another PHP editor?

Dear Raymond,

unfortunately, we have no idea and no more information as you have from
press. Please, be patient until the acquisition is done.

Thanks a lot!

I was not even thinking about the future of NetBeans, just the future of MySQL. Geez, it would be absolutely devastating if NetBeans disappeared (or the development halted), especially now when Python is getting proper support.

The code for NetBeans is licensed under the GPL. Even if Sun/Oracle drop
it, someone can move it to SourceForge and continue the project,
probably with a new name. This is already happening with parts of MySQL,
since many from the original team left after Sun took over. But I
believe, unlike MySQL, there are no proprietary components in NetBeans
that would disappear in this case.

This is why the GPL was created and is the greatest advantage of FOSS.
It is not possible for anyone to take it away.
