contention between rspec plugins and rspec gem

I had this same problem. What I ended up doing was installing git and
following the instructions at
http://github.com/dchelimsky/rspec-rails/wikis/home for installing an
RSpec release >= 1.1.4 and Rails <= 2.1.0

I have just started using it but so far so good.
