I have a large web app being maintained in NB 6.7. My environment is Windows,
JDK 6, JSF 1.1, J2EE 1.4, Tomcat 6.0.29, and MySQL 5.1. I use the visual web
backward compatibility pack.

The app has been operational for over 3 years and has been extensively
modified.

Until a few months ago, a call to the log method in a page or session bean
caused a message to be written to Tomcat's localhost log file. Now, nothing.
There are no error messages or other warnings that something's wrong.

Over the past three years I've migrated to newer versions of Java, Tomcat,
and MySQL. I checked all my configuration files against previous versions of
the web app and Tomcat and nothing's changed that I can tell. It just seems
that the log method stopped working for me.

Question: Does anyone have any ideas why logging would suddenly stop
working?

Would it be better to give up trying to fix this and migrate to another
logging framework? I'm considering log4j.

I have over 1000 logging calls, which in the past have helped diagnose and
fix numerous bugs. So migrating to a new logging framework will take
considerable time and effort.

Question: What logging framework would you recommend?
