When adding a jar to a project classpath, there's an option to use a
path that's relative to an IDE variable; but when adding a jar to a
library, there's no equivalent option. Is this by design? If so, why?

I tried editing nblibraries.properties by hand to replace some absolute
paths with variables (not IDE variables but properties defined in
nblibraries-private.properties), and it half-worked. The ant build
succeeded, but the IDE could no longer find the source and javadoc
associated with the library.

Hi,

I see this as a valid point.  There shall be a feature which will allow me creating a library for some library XYZ and to add JAR files into that library from some folder like $XYZ_HOME/lib

Is this feature already available in NetBeans?  If not this will become a RFE.

Sure, but the absolute path to the jars will end up in the library definition. If you develop on Windows and Unix, these paths will probably be different (for instance, because the Unix system administrator forces you store your stuff in certain locations). Thus the library definitions on the Windows box will point to non-existing jars if you try to use them on the Unix box. Thus you may have to create 50 or 100 library definitions two times...
