Help!!!

I am unable to debug in Nebeans 6.5 or 6.7 on Fedora 11. Everytime I startup the debugger, I get the following message in the terminal window:

&"warning: GDB: Failed to set controlling terminal: Operation not permitted\n"

Normally, output from the debugger goes to the terminal window but this is the only message I receive in the window.

I am running Fedora 11 X86_64 with Java version 1.6.0_14-b16. I have tried Nebeans 6.7 and 6.7.1. Nebeans 6.5.1 is even worse. It displays the warning in the terminal window and then exits the debugger. The debugger version is 6.8.50.20090302-33.fc11(x86_64). I have even installed the latest version of gdb 6.8.50.20090804. Same result.

I have successfully been using Netbeans since 5.5 mostly on Fedora (7, 8, 9 and 10). I have an installation Netbeans 6.5 and 6.7 running on Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64 with no GDB problems (version 6.8-3ubuntu2). I want to stay on Fedora 11 but I need Nebeans 6.7 to function with GDB.

I did find some references to this error message on Google ...

"Thiago Bauermann fixed a bug in GDB, just after the release of 6.8, to allow GDB to set the controlling terminal of the inferior."

But as I said earlier, I tried the latest snapshot of GDB and it did not work. My next step will be to try Eclipse.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank You
David

NetBeans have problem with 'konsole' program from KDE4. Can you try
xterm or gnome-terminal? You need open "Project Properties" window and
change Run|Terminal Type property.

Egor,

Setting "Console Type" to "Output Window" fixed the problem. I tried setting "Terminal Type" to "Gnome Terminal" but I still received the warning message but I got my output from cerr and cout. I am not use KDE and konsole is not installed.

Everyone - thank you for your help.

Hi --
I a little new to net beans and I am having the same problem with GDB. I just want to know how to follow the previous instructions. ie how to set "Console Type" to "Output Window". Where is it done? A menu choice -- init file ...?

You should right-click the project name in Projects tab, select Properties in the popup menu (very last option), then click the Run category when the properties dialog opens. In here you can set Console Type to Output Window.

You can launches 2 gnome-terminals and reproduces this problem in Ubuntu 9.10.

type 'tty' in first terminal
==>/dev/pts/0
launch gdb with -tty option in second terminal (gdb ~/NetBeansProjects/Welcome_1/dist/Debug/GNU-Linux-x86/welcome_1 -tty /dev/pts/0)
type 2 gdb commands "b main" and "r"
"warning: GDB: Failed to set controlling terminal: Operation not permitted" message appears in first terminal.
Ideas?

i saw, that that error message does not affect my debugger...
i just didt make it to compile of debug type (VMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug)

Now everything is running fine! (well, just the debugger... my code is still crap...)

thanks alot!

I get the same error. But this is not preventing me from debugging.
Maybe you have an error in your program and the breakpoint is placed on a variable declaration, meaning the debugger will not stop.
Also check you are compiling with -g option.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 kernel 2.6.32-24-generic
Netbeans 6.9
GDB 7.1-ubuntu
