I'd love to know too - the emboldened text is much harder to quickly
discern than the asterisk.

Under pressure I have wasted time by forgetting to save, because I didn't see the
asterisk ...
I mean, really, that's what asterisks are for.

It's truely amazing what is more important to the devs that a performant,
non-blocking IDE experience isn't it?

First - Gregg, this was done by a completely independent team.
Basically, the people who implemented this change would not fix the
issues you are consistently reporting (we are taking your comments
seriously and we have noted the performance problems you mention).
Please, see this issue - I don't like the change too:
http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=175546
Also, there is a way to re-enable asterisk. A command-line switch
"-J-Dnb.tabnames.html=false" can be used for this (you can put it in
"$NB_INSTALL/etc/netbeans.conf" file).
With regards,
Petr Dvorak

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
That worked, although I had to search for the file. On my computer (OS
X) it was:
/Applications/NetBeans/NetBeans 6.8
RC1.app/Contents/Resources/NetBeans/etc/netbeans.conf

For the first few weeks (months?) since this was changed on trunk then
6.8 daily, I just thought it was kind of new and interesting. I have
to admit though, over time this is becoming rather annoying because
the visual difference is rather minimal when compare to an extra
character, i.e. an asterisk.
Having said that, I do actually find the colour coding scheme of the
VCS even more clear than the asterisk.
Just my 2 cents,
Alex.

| Thank you Petr. I have applied the change and Netbeans 6.8 is no longer behaving like
an alien.
