A few questions that have been partly raised on the forceTen mailing list:

NetBeans 6.8 has got a Maven Repository tab that allows to navigate
through a Maven repository. By default, one can see the local repo, the
Central repo, the java.net and NetBeans repo, but it's possible to add
further repos by pressing the "+" button. At this point, a dialog
appears asking for a few info. I'm trying it with a Maven project opened
(forceTen). I'm not reporting them as bugs yet since perhaps I'm not
understanding something.

When I insert "maven2-release-repository.forceten.kenai.com" in the
"repository id" field, I see that "repository name" and "repository URL"
are automatically filled in, clearly taking the values from my current
master pom.

1. The repository name is identical to the repository id, and can't be
edited. I suppose this is a mistake: either it should be editable, or
should be filled with the name attribute of the repo
2. The repository URL is filled with
"https://kenai.com/website/forceten/maven-repository/releases" and can't
be edited. Now, https clearly is the distribution repository (used for
publishing) while it would be better to use the plain http for browsing.
Not a big deal, but I think it would be better to have it editable.
3. At this point it's mandatory to add the "index URL", which I suppose
is the URL of the .index file in the repo. Nexus for instance provides
it; but if you have deployed a repo on a plain WebDAV file system,
there's no .index. Without inserting it you can't go on - can't it be
made optional?

Thanks.

No way. You need the nexus index. All that is shown in the browser comes
from the index.
