Hi,
Rather old topic, but you are not alone.
Sure you did some steps ahead, but maybe else may read this..

for starting with WS try to get two additional tools
SoapUI: http://www.soapui.org/ - a tool to test web services
tcpmon: https://tcpmon.dev.java.net - a tool to intercept any communication and debug the system communication

And to call a web service provided on internet, don't compose the messages yourself, the basic steps are
- get the WSDL of the service and put it in your project
- generate a WSDL java client
- use the generated java webservice client classes

for details, google/yahoo and play a little, it is nothing better then wen you find out how it works Razz

good luck
Gabriel
