Netbeans 7, Gnome 3 and Ubuntu 11.04

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and Netbeans 7.
As I don't like their new Unity desktop environment, I have switched to
Gnome 3, following the tutorial that can be found here:

Everything works like a charm, except Netbeans 7. The menus and
contextual menus are nearly impossible to navigate into:
- when you click on a menu, it disappears as soon as you release the
mouse button.
- when holding the mouse button and drawing along the menu (from File to
Edit for instance), nothing happens (the File menu remains opened the
Edit menu is not visible).
- when dragging further on the right, the Edit menu is finally
displayed, but the mouse is on the Refactor menu
- It is almost impossible to select an item in the menu and when it
finally works, you cannot select a sub-menu item

I was wondering if someone had installed Netbeans with Gnome 3 and if
they encountered the same kind of problems.

I know that Ubuntu does not officially support Gnome 3, so maybe it is
this particular version of Gnome 3 that is broken. OpenSuse however
officially supports it and Fedora will at the end of the month. Has
anyone tryied on one of those distributions?

In the meantime, I had to switch back to Eclipse :-(

Try using Shift + F10 it's an alternative to the right mouse click and ALT + Key to navigate the main menus.

I've also experienced this in all versions of gnome3 I've used (with gnome-shell) be it fedora, opensuse and ubuntu, although I was able to reduce the problem by using sun jre on ubuntu.

I believe it's a bug in java or gnome-shell rather than netbeans as it happens for another java application I run (arduino).

I'm not sure where to report the bug...of if it effected anyone but me.

It doesn't happen if you don't maximize the window.

That sounds like a bug for openjdk more than Ubuntu, NetBeans, or the other
application you mentioned to me. It sounds like openjdk does not have parity
with the released JDK and that isn't good. I'm using the same version of ubuntu
etc but have installed the Sun Java version from the update center. All is well.

I already have Sun JDK installed and setup as the default version of java via alternatives... So it has to come from somewhere else.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04, with the default Gnome that ship with it, Gnome 2.32, dont like Unity desktop.
I installed the latest sun jdk, to be used with Netbeans.
The fonts in netbeans look fine with gnome, in the unity desktop the fonts look very ugly.

I am also looking for a resolution to this.

I remember having this same issue on an older version of Ubuntu (8 or 9 era) and it popped up again on my Slackware box using Gnome 3.

Here's how I solved it in both instances:

In my netbeans.conf file I changed

I just upgraded to Fedora 15 from Fedora 14 and applied the hinting patch
to my local fonts.conf file.

Fonts look fine in Gnome 3, tolerable in KDE 4, and terrible in
WindowMaker. I'm going to have to spend some time fixing that (again).

All that aside, I normally run NetBeans using the Nimbus look and feel. If
you're not developing desktop applications, give it a shot. The look is
consistent across all environments (Gnome 3, KDE, WindowMaker,
Windows/XP), the fonts look OK, and the menu borders work.

I add the following at the end of netbeans_default_options in
netbeans.conf:

--laf Nimbus

Of course you can try it by launching Netbeans from the command line
with this same switch.

Using the GtK theme in NetBeans 7 on Gnome 3, the menus behaved
properly, but the borders were gone.

Well, I've seen the loss of window decorations in Unity enough that I can't use it anymore so I use what they call Ubuntu Classic which I think is Gnome 2 and everything works fine including Netbeans.

I've had the stupid mouse/menu problem also in all programs. Seems (at least for me) that changing desktops to something else then back and the right mouse button works properly again (for a while). Again no problems in Ubuntu Classic.

I personally can't blame any of this on NetBeans.

I just installed Netbeans 7 and had the same problem as Beno and others.

I read in Fedora forum (or a Fedora mailing list, I forgot where) that Java does not update its coordinates when it is maximized. So if your unmaximized window is not at the top left of the screen and you maximize the window, Java does not know its top left corner is at the top left of the screen and it fails to follow the menu with the mouse pointer.

If you want to run your application maximized, first move your window to the top left of the screen (unmaximize the window first if it is maximized), then maximize it. It works for me.
