I'm new to Maven, joining an existing project. As part of my effort to get up
to speed, I tried creating a new Maven Web project in NetBeans 7. This fails
with several messages, beginning with

Failed to retrieve plugin descriptor for
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-deploy-plugin:2.5: Plugin
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-deploy-plugin:2.5 or one of its dependencies
could not be resolved: Failed to read artifact descriptor for
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-deploy-plugin:jar:2.5

This error occurred after it attempted to download maven-deploy-plugin from
my local artifactory. What's interesting is that I have not told NetBeans
about any such artifactory. That's clearly left over from the other project,
even though that project is closed. And even after quitting and restarting
NetBeans. Clearly, it is remembering something from the other project. That
memory seems to be in
~/.netbeans/7.0/config/Projects/org-netbeans-modules-maven. Or maybe
NetBeans is getting that information from my .m2/settings.xml file. Either
way, I'm reluctant to delete either config file and start over out of
concern for messing up the other project.

What *should* be happening when I create a new Maven project? What can I do
to fix my errors? Thanks.
