Netbeans is the most important application on my computer. I was using 7.1.1 and I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04. Now when I fire up Netbeans there are no menus!
I tried to uninstall 7.1.1 and do a fresh install for 7.1.2 but the same problem exists. This is a disaster for me. I wonder if anyone else has the same problem and what can be done about it?
This is urgent so I would appreciate hearing if anyone else has upgraded and has the same problem.

The problem is related to the Ambiance color scheme. The area of the text has a black background. The menu text is black. Black on black is invisible. Naturally I couldn't exactly remember where the menu should be, inside Netbeans or on the top of screen status bar. All I could see was there was no longer any menus.

I went to the Radiance color scheme and now I can work again.

There is still one small problem. With many projects open there is one set to the main project in bold text. With Ubuntu 12.04, all the projects look like they are in bold text so I can no longer tell which is the main project.

This might be a font problem? Any suggestions?

The question is: who can fix it? Is it something which Netbeans can fix or is it totally in Ubuntu's court? Is it something which maybe an additional option from Netbeans could help? Maybe an option to choose the font? (Perhaps the option already exists and I just need to know what is the best font?)

Same problem here; I've recently upgraded Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04 and Netbeans fonts got annoyingly bold.

Hi Folks,

Append "--laf Metal" (without quotes) to your netbeans exec link.
Here i have:

Exec=/bin/sh "/home/username/bin/netbeans-7.1/bin/netbeans" --laf Metal

This is not the best laf (look and feel) but is better than the current one on 12.04. No more bold in everywhere and visible menu, including in the ambiance theme.

I remember hearing something about a JDK distro issue on Linux. Try to use OpenJDK instead.

Copied this fix from another mailing list...

Hi guys, you may have noticed that a new LTS been released several hours ago.
It has a bug in a default gtk2 theme "Ambiance".
All java applications menus will have a black font on a black background.
Bug already reported on launchpad, but have no idea when it will be fixed, so here is a solution:
sudo vim /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

Find a row 338 with contents:
style "menu" {

and make it look like this:
style "menu" = "dark" {

save and your java menus will be fine.

Hope this helps.

Covered on the NetCAT list, haven't tested it myself:

I've never seen ANY serious software without bugs. The question is: once they are found, what is done about them? I'll admit that I am very impressed both by Linux as well as by Netbeans.

Look at all the help which was offered on my cry for help. Until the bug gets fixed the addition of "--laf Metal" is most successful. I'm back on board and I can get my work done. I never had such luck when I was working with Microsoft.

Whatever issue you’ve got with the Look & Feel in Ubuntu 12.04 PP, running Netbeans, you can set the LAF native look & Feel instead of the GTK one (which has by the way several issues under Linux).

Go to your netbeans directory (ex: /home/user/netbeans7.2/etc) and open the file : netbeans.conf

then add the following line to netbeans options:

-J-Dswing.aatext=true -J-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=lcd --laf Metal

Check :
http://hanynowsky.wordpress.com/2012/04/27/netbeans-ide-look-feel-under-ubuntu-12-04/

Plus: If you use Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu, you will get the Metal LAF by default.

Wow, I never realized that! All those years of GNOME have poisoned my
mind to always add "--laf Metal". Clearly, I made the right decision by
switching to KDE :)
