Hi, all. I wanted to let the NB community know that today is my last day at Sun, and that actually the entire DB team was eliminated today. I suspect some other set of folks within Sun will take up the mantel, so don't panic, they're just trying to do more with less.
It's been great interacting with you all, and trying to help you be successful in your jobs. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all your help and sorry to see you go. I'm sure you'll be
successful in whatever the next phase of your career is.
P.S. I hope you meant "take up the mantle"... mantels are quite heavy :)

Hi,
good luck from me too.
But what the hell does this mean???
Why does sun kill a whole db team, in my
opinion this will have an impact on the quality of netbeans.
I see a decrease in quality, ... but why?

This is not the place to discuss the polecy of Sun, but an exception on my
behalf, they have just purchaced MYSQL and I guess the budget has to be
adjusted.

Worldwide financial meltdown, possibly. US economy in recession, UK
economy stuffed, China looking down the barrel of a 30's style
depression. More than enough reasons, really.

You forgot the one where the world moved to Linux and commodity
hardware and Sun didn't change until it was too late. Many of their
customers are on Wall Street, and they aren't buying as much.

It probably means that there is redundant staff after the MySQL merger.
They already have a MySQL DB tools team, so maybe they will get them to
take on the DB tooling in NetBeans. Maybe they will even work on
replacing the existing MySQL tools with something built on the NetBeans
Platform so that developers can have excellent tooling in NetBeans, OR
use a standalone app. Over the last couple of years Sun seems to be
merging many products into NetBeans.
David: Other than the sudden influx in people looking for jobs, I doubt
you`ll have a hard time finding new employment with Sun Microsystems on
your resume! Good luck and thanks for the work you and your team have
done for us.
Thanks,
Ryan
