Hello NetBeans community,

did you know that more than half a million people are subscribed to netbeans.org mailing lists? It's obviously a lot of feedback. In addition to that many people write about NetBeans via blogs, forums and other modern channels. We have implemented NetCAT programs 4 years ago to cover stabilization phase of NetBeans development. But we want more.

Today we are introducing a brand new process called Voice of Community [1]. Our goal is to further improve the way we listen to our userbase and take the input even more seriously. However, since this initiative is about community we are looking for 2 passionate community members who would cooperate on this with us. Let's call them VOC Captains! :-)

[1] http://wiki.netbeans.org/VoiceOfCommunity

If you find this idea interesting, don't hesitate and let us know about you via an application form which is accessible from the Wiki page. The form will stay opened until next Monday - 12/15.

Thank you very much,

Excellent.....
I just submitted my application Jiri.
I've been vocal, and would enjoy helping the developers understand what
challenges the programmers in the field are facing.

Will there be a time limit/period - like 1 year intervals? This is very nice. I like being on the NB board, but this is more of what I was hoping we could do as members of the board when I was first elected to it besides mostly conflict resolution and the rest of the time not so much of anything. As a member of the board and the Dream Team I don't know if I would want to do them all, so for now I may not apply, but this sure looks like a great opportunity for folks to get in and help out.

Seems folks who are on the VOC would be practical Dream Team members by the time they are done..they would have to get nominated if those monthly reports are looking good Very Happy. Anyways, I love it, and I'm glad to see Kurt has filled out an application as he has mentioned wanting to contribute more. I sure hope there are a lot of applicants.

I would like to see someone using NB RCP also be on this some day if not the first time around. It would be great if there were 3 seats for the community and 1 from NetBeans, and 1 of those would be reserved just for NB RCP developers. Of course that is my perspective as a user of the RCP.

Great idea for a program no matter what though!

Thanks,

Wade

Hello Wade,

yes, I was thinking of limited tenure like 1/2 - 1 year at maximum but I wanted to discuss that plus some other stuff with the two selected captains on a fine tuning online chat later next week.

Of course, thanks Wade for your support! I agree that VOC Captains will possess unique influence on NetBeans and the fact they are currently 2 is not an unchangeable condition. I only wanted to have the team small to increase our chances to reach consensus. So I will be glad to see more applicants including you (logically when your NetBeans Board service ends).

I understand that. Too, the smaller the group, the easier it will be to have those bi-weekly meetings. This is one thing we know from the Dream Team is that the more folks the harder it is to get times for everyone to be able to communicate and get together. For this type program, VOC, it seems that narrowed group will be able to communicate and work through any issues more easily than a larger group. Plus, they have all of us to listen to, so it isn't as if they live in a bubble :-D

Certainly.

Hello NetBeans community,

I am very pleased to announce that according to the plan VOC [1] captains were selected yesterday. The 3 representatives are: Annabel Melongo from Cameroon, Tushar Joshi from India and Michel Graciano from Brazil. I am sure they will take their new role seriously and that NetBeans users will soon recognize their work and influence.

If you are interested in the next steps, the team will soon have a kick-off online meeting in order to fine tune certain operational details and the official start of the VOC process is expected in January.

So, congratulations Annabel, Tushar and Michel!

Best regards,
-Jirka

Very Happy
The most important point here is see how opening the NetBeans project is becoming. We can see several nb projects/programs where community are involved and trying to help in several ways to improve the IDE. The most important thing I believe is that any software just become successful if it listen the users, and I understand it is what NetBeans is trying to do in the last years, with programs like Dream Team and this as well.
I am really happy to be part of this!
