Hi,

I'm new to NetBeans.
I'm using it on a Windows machine for a large PHP project, but experience a lot of crashes using it.
The crashes (more like freezes: the java.exe is still there, the task remains in the taskbar, but it doesn't react any more) strangely happen often (but not every time) when trying to copy something using [CTRL]-[C] or trying to search something using [CTRL]-[F].

My system:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (32 bit, German Version)

Java:
java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode, sharing)

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual E2180
3 GB RAM

I've tried playing with the different RAM settings mentioned under "generally useful switches" here, with no effect.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm using NB 6.5 on Windows XP platform as well I am finding the same issue as well. For no obvious reason, NB just freezes and it can often take several minutes to come back to life. Very frustrating.

Richard.

Are you using it for PHP as well?
I have quite a large PHP project and the files are located on a network drive.

Ctrl-F in the Projects/Files view or Ctrl-F in the source code editor?

In the editor. But the freezes also occur without pressing Ctrl-... keys, it seems kind of random.

In the editor. ...

So I am sorry, I have no idea what might cause the freezes.

I'm catching the tail end here. Can you give me a rundown of the entire issue and what exactly it does? Does anything happen before a hang? Does screen drawing act funny? Do other application crash and hang? Have you been using other versions of NB on this system? Does the IDE work except for a specific thing? Is this only happening in the editor when you try to use Find? Does the focus get lost from the single editor window, yet you can use other editor windows in the IDE after the hang?

I'm working with the IDE, e.g. typing into the editor window, and from one second to the other, the IDE completely freezes. The process remains in the task manager, but is unresponsive. After tabbing out and in again, the IDE doesn't refresh, so that you can only see a white page.
This happens often, but not exclusively when I press [CTRL] combinations.

Wade Chandler wrote:

I didn't experience anything.

Wade Chandler wrote:
Does screen drawing act funny?

No.

Wade Chandler wrote:
Do other application crash and hang?

No, the system and all other applications run fine.

Wade Chandler wrote:

It's the first time I'm trying NetBeans. Confused

Wade Chandler wrote:

What do you mean? It's working completely - until it freezes.

Wade Chandler wrote:

No, also [CTRL]-C for example.

Wade Chandler wrote:

No, it's the COMPLETE IDE which is freezing.

The problem came from your code itself. Once it failed, the server (either GlassFish or Apache Tomcat) does not release memory, until it is out of memory and you have to restart NetBeans again. Sometimes, you have to restart your machine. I found GlassFish is not as reliable as Apache Tomcat, need more time to find out why.

To be honest, I have no clue what you're talking about.
I'm using a PHP project, so no GlassFish or Tomcat involved. All I do is editing files, not more, and the freezes occur.

I have seen it happen that display drivers can cause NB to lockup. See if you video card driver has any updates on your manufacturers web site. If just using NB makes it lock up all the time this can often be an issue. Too, you might do this. Close the IDE, delete:

Windows:
%userprofile%\.netbeans\6.5\

Linux:
$HOME/.netbeans/6.5

and then rerun it. Any preferences will be lost, but at least we can weed out if the issue is caused by something corrupted in your "user directory". Too, in your NB installation folder look for etc/netbeans.conf and paste the insides of it here. That might give me some options to give you to try.

Better to just rename it, e.g. (on Linux):

cd $HOME/.netbeans
mv 6.5 6.5-backup

then try to run NetBeans (the "6.5" directory will be created) and do
any tests you want (e.g. with various JVM settings)

To restore the original settings, just rename the user directory back:

cd $HOME/.netbeans
mv 6.5-backup 6.5

Hello,

I encountered the same issues when using NB 6.5 development versions with PHP.
The combination ob xDebug and Apache > 2.2.6 seems not to be very stable. Not only that I had crashes of the Apache and connection losses to xDebug but also that my whole environment stopped responding after a while, possibly of unfreed system resources.

First thing is that I upgraded java to version 1.6.0_10 and then I am using nginx as a webserver with php-fastcgi and now everything runs fine.

Removing/renaming the 6.5 directory didn't help. I've upgraded to Java 1.6.0_11 now and am trying again.

=============================================
java version "1.6.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
=============================================

Next step will be updating graphics drivers. Thanks for you advice so far.
