I am not entirely sure where to put this so I am putting it here, feel free to move it.

I am new to Netbeans module development and thought that I would run through the tutorials to learn about it, but I found that one of the tutorials does not work. The tutorial I am using is: https://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-filetype.html
I am using Netbeans 8.1.
When I run the project, the file type and template are not their, but I can open the custom file type just fine and it does show up with the right icon. The only part that does not work is the file type's template showing up. Also the Editor and Fonts & Colors does not show up under options when I run it.

Any help would be great.
Thank you,
Trevor Flynn

Yes, this is the right place for questions dealing with the NetBeans
Platform.

The tutorial provides a link to the source code that you should have at
the end of the tutorial.

Here is the link to it, referenced at the top of the tutorial:

http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/8.0/tutorials/AbcFileType

Happy to help further if needed, note also that this book is highly
recommended:

leanpub.com/nbp4beginners

as well as this book:

https://www.amazon.com/JavaFX-Client-Programming-NetBeans-Platform/dp/0321927710

I'm 1/3 through the book and so far I can't recommend it for several reasons:
- biggest part of the book is printed out sourcecode
- overall it feels more like a step by step - type what you see - writing the application the author wants you to kind of book.
- a lot of useless text in there, either praising (netbeans, javafx, the reader), or repeating itself over and over with minor changes.
(at multiple occasions, I skipped over several pages because they where mere duplicates of earlier pages)
- I really wanted to go JavaFX with my app, but there are so many issues with javafx itself and some dealbreakers when it comes to combining it with netbeans (threading issues, visual style issues, ..).
- A lot of things I still had to find out the hard way. For example the undo/redo manger is not mentioned anywhere in the book.

Is the nbp4beginners book more focused on actually teaching the NB Platform rather than letting you type off source-code?

On the page above you can see reviews of the book, which will answer
your question about whether it focuses on teaching you the NetBeans
Platform.

The other book (https://leanpub.com/nbp4beginners) is much better. And it was written for the newer version of the platform, so it's more up to date.
