So as we all know, having to manually increment or change Specification Version every time we need to push an update for a module is tedious, or can be forgotten, introducing frustration.

Is it possible to automatically increment the value of Specification Version whenever we build the module? Say that we want to use the classical Dewey-decimal format X.Y.Z but make Z become time since epoch every time we build the module.

I did some research on it but thus far found nothing.

We did something similar. We create our own ant task and plugged it inside the build.xml of the module.

We wanted to not auto-increment, but at least make the incrementation itself much simpler, and also follow a similar naming format as you propose.

So, we installed our BumpVersionAction into the IDE, which allows right-clicking on (module) projects and increasing their specification version - all the action does is to replace the Specification Version line with a new one following a yyyy.MM.dd.HH.mm format. (Actually, with a transformed year, making 2017 version 7, 2018 version 8 and so on.
